Freight transport to Belgium
Belgium is compact, central and dense with logistics infrastructure. Antwerp handles a large share of the container volume bound for central Europe, and the whole country is within three days by road.
Belgium punches well above its size in freight terms. Antwerp is the second largest container port in Europe, Liège has become a major air cargo hub, and the road network is among the densest on the continent. For a Romanian company, that means Belgium is usually both a market and a transit point at the same time.
Road transit from western Romania is two to three days for a full load, crossing Hungary, Austria and Germany. Groupage runs weekly to fortnightly depending on the region, with Flanders better served than the Ardennes. Container work through Antwerp follows the same pattern as Rotterdam, either clearing locally or moving inland under transit.
Typical transit times
| From | To | Transit |
|---|---|---|
| Oradea | Antwerp Road, FTL | 2 to 3 days |
| Oradea | Brussels Road, FTL | 3 days |
| Oradea | Liège Road, groupage | 4 to 5 days |
| Antwerp | Oradea Ocean import, FCL | 3 to 4 days inland |

Customs and documentation
Intra-EU road movements need no customs declaration. Antwerp import work does, and the same choice applies as at Rotterdam: clear at the port and continue as EU goods, or issue a T1 and clear in Romania.
Antwerp is also a major hub for chemical and dangerous goods traffic. If your shipment is ADR or IMDG classified, the documentation needs to be right before the container is gated in, because a rejection at the terminal is both expensive and slow to unwind.
Frequently asked questions
Antwerp or Rotterdam for container imports to Romania?
Often either, and it comes down to the carrier’s schedule and the inland rate on the week in question. Antwerp tends to be slightly cheaper on inland haulage to central Europe, Rotterdam has more sailings. We check both when we price an import rather than defaulting to one port.
Do you handle dangerous goods through Belgium?
Yes, within the classes that road and sea accept. Belgium’s chemical cluster means the infrastructure and the expertise are there, but the documentation standard is strict. We prepare the classification and the transport documents before the goods move rather than at the gate.
How frequent is groupage to Belgium?
Weekly to Flanders and the Brussels region, less frequent to the south and the Ardennes. For a single pallet the wait for the next departure is usually the main variable, so if the date matters, ask for the departure schedule when you request the quote.
Tell us what you need to move.
Send the supplier city or port of loading, the volume and weight, and the date the goods are ready. We will come back with a landed cost and a realistic transit time, usually within one working day.
