Inside the EU, no customs formalities
Freight transport to Spain
Spain is the far end of the European road network from Romania. A full load reaches Barcelona in three to four days and Madrid in four, crossing France on the way.
At roughly two thousand three hundred kilometres to Barcelona and more again to Madrid, Spain is one of the longest road lanes we run inside the European Union. The distance means the driving hours rules, rather than the route, set the transit time: a single driver cannot legally cover it faster, so a double crewed truck is the only way to compress the schedule meaningfully.
Because the lane is long and traffic is unbalanced, return capacity matters more here than on shorter routes. Spanish exports of food, automotive components and machinery to eastern Europe give us reasonable return options, and pairing an outbound with an inbound is usually the difference between a competitive rate and an expensive one.

Customs and documentation
Spain is an EU member state, so there are no customs formalities for goods in free circulation and no duty or import VAT at the border. The transit crosses Hungary, Austria, Italy or Germany and France, all of which are equally inside the single market.
The practical consideration on this lane is timing rather than paperwork. Weekend and holiday driving restrictions apply in France and Spain and can add a full day if the schedule lands badly. We plan departures to avoid them, which is one reason a Spanish transit quoted honestly is sometimes a day longer than a map suggests.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Spain take four days when the distance is only a day of driving?
Because a driver may not legally drive it in a day. EU rules cap daily driving at nine hours, extendable to ten twice a week, with mandatory rest periods. Two thousand three hundred kilometres is therefore three driving days plus rest. A double crewed truck with two drivers running in shifts can do it in roughly half the time, at a higher cost.
Is ocean freight an option to Spain?
For large volumes with a flexible deadline, yes, through Constanța to Valencia or Barcelona. It is slower, typically two weeks or more including the inland legs, but for heavy, low value cargo the cost per tonne can be meaningfully lower than road. We will price it alongside road when the profile suits.
How long does groupage take to Spain?
Realistically six to eight working days to the main cities, longer to Andalusia and the north west. Groupage on long lanes compounds: the cross docking delay is the same but the driving time is much greater. If the deadline is firm, a part load moving direct is often the better answer.
