Inside the EU, no customs formalities

Freight transport to Germany

Germany is the busiest lane out of Romania and the one we run most often. Full loads reach Bavaria overnight and the north within two to three days, with groupage departures several times a week.

Germany is Romania’s largest trading partner, and for most Romanian manufacturers it is the first export market that becomes routine rather than occasional. The volume on this corridor means capacity is generally available, rates are competitive, and a shipment that misses one departure can usually catch the next within a day or two.

The lane is entirely within the European Union, so there is no customs clearance and no border formality beyond the usual transport documentation. What does need managing is the delivery end. German receivers, particularly automotive plants and retail distribution centres, almost always work to booked time slots, and a truck that arrives outside its window can lose a full day.

Customs and documentation

Germany is inside the EU customs union and the single market, so goods in free circulation move without customs declarations, duty or import VAT at the border. A CMR consignment note and the commercial invoice are normally the only documents the driver carries.

Two things still catch companies out. The first is VAT: an intra-community supply is zero rated only when you hold a valid VAT number for the customer and proof that the goods left Romania, which the signed CMR provides. The second is the posting of drivers and minimum wage rules, which are the carrier’s obligation but which appear in the rate.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a truck take from Romania to Germany?

From Oradea, southern Germany is typically an overnight run and the north is two to three days depending on the driving hours. From Bucharest add roughly a day. Groupage shipments take longer, usually three to five days, because of the cross docking and multiple delivery stops.

Do I need customs documents for Germany?

No, as long as the goods are in free circulation in the EU. There is no customs declaration between Romania and Germany. You do need a correct commercial invoice and a CMR, and for VAT purposes you need proof of the transport, which is why we return the signed CMR to you.

Can you deliver to automotive plants with slot booking?

Yes, and we assume slot booking applies unless you tell us otherwise. Give us the plant, the gate and the reference at quotation stage. We book the window and plan the transit to hit it, because an unbooked arrival at a German OEM is usually refused outright.

Tell us what you need to move.

Send the supplier city or port of loading, the volume and weight, and the date the goods are ready. We will come back with a landed cost and a realistic transit time, usually within one working day.
